The classic story of the bully everyone knows. One kid who isn’t like the others makes new friends that eventually stand up for each other. The bully realizes what he’s done and they become friends. Well that isn’t true in some cases. In R.J Palacios “Wonder”, August gets bullied by Julian for looking different. But we never really know why. That’s why I’m here. This chapter will lead you through why he does this. Some of this even started at the beginning.
When August first started school, three students were asked to show him around. One of these kids was Julian, who right away started to be rude. Soon, on the first day of school, August mentioned that he liked star wars. Julian said he liked it too and asked him if his favorite character was the one with the deformed face as a joke. Why would he do that? Most bully’s do that for the attention. Maybe that’s why he did that. Since nobody really could have understood that joke, he most likely was doing it to be mean because August was different.
Julian and his friends started to put notes inside Augusts locker. Only August knew about these and he didn’t want to tell anyone. Julian was doing this in front of his friends so he was trying to act cool. These notes were really mean. One note read “I bet your mother wishes you’d never been born. You should just do everybody a favor and die.”(pg.353) That was Julian and his friends being mean because August was different. Julian also might have written those notes to make August go to a different school. But it hasn’t just been Julian who has been the one being rude to August.
In one chapter, Julian’s mom complains about August going to the school. His mom complains that August has disabilities and is holding the school back. She says “I myself included- who question the decision to let this child into our school at all.”(pg.162) The principal responds saying that August doesn’t have disabilities and is a really good student.
So what we understand is that Julian wants to be popular and get attention. Julian is influenced from his moms opinion so he also doesn’t want August at the school either. Since August won’t be leaving, Julian and his parents decide that its best to leave and that’s the last we hear of Julian.
